    If it seems to you like there are more visitors from China than ever before, you are right. According to research acquired by the Carmel Chamber of Commerce, the country most represented among international visitors to Carmel-by-the-Sea in 2014 was China. The other top ten countries, based on Visa card spending for the zip code 93921, are Canada, United Kingdom, Brazil, France, Germany, Australia, Switzerland, Spain and Mexico in that order. Read more

    The Forest & Beach Commission has been working on the issues related to beach fires for a number of months and of course this issue has come up before. The current situation is that this past summer there seemed to be more beach fires than ever and because there were no big storms in winter 2013-2014, the charcoal has created a mess. The Commission is talking about limiting the number of fires and putting in some type of receptacle that keeps the fire off the sand. Read more

    A study just released by the Monterey County Convention & Visitors Bureau shows a $53 million economic impact from the events -all of them- during Car Week in August, 2014. This is no surprise. Lodging properties were at 100% occupancy for the week. Restaurants were packed. One restaurant owner told me that he had his biggest day ever on the Tuesday during the Carmel-by-the-Sea Concours on the Avenue. Other obvious “hot” business was going on for caterers, transportation companies, event venues such as Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, audio visual companies, and print publications who sell advertising. Attorneys, banks, accountants, and insurance companies who work with “car guys” are benefited before, during and after. Read more

One of the first things I did then was go around asking businesses what their #1 challenge was and most said “parking”. A recent survey of chamber member businesses showed the same thing. And how many of us have had a friend tell us that they don’t come to Carmel because it’s too hard to find parking? Read more
