Carmel may be one of the greenest towns in California. With spotless streets, an active recycling program, strict municipal codes protecting trees and natural plants and a real "walk rather than drive" culture. Town voters recently rejected an offer by the U.S. Postal Service to deliver mail to residential homes, so as to avoid street-side mail boxes and the noise and pollution of delivery trucks.
